Port Forwarding [top]
If you are having trouble hosting or connecting to a group, check if your port is open for communication.
New Connections [top]
- Warning: trying to connect from a behind a firewall or using a router that doesn't have port forwarding set up might freeze the application or prevent establishing a connection.
- Specify any User name (it doesn't need to be unique). Enter an existing Group name if your are joining or a unique Group name if you are starting a collaboration. Input a Password for the collaboration if desired.

Server Options
- Select the location of the collaboration's server. You may need to
configure your firewall to enable this service.
- If you are not hosting the collaboration on your local machine then either leave Default selected to use our server or select Other and input an existing Host and Port.
- If you are hosting the collaboration on your local machine then select My Computer and input a Port. Your global IP address should be detected and displayed in the Host field. If it is not a global address (i.e. 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.x.x, etc.) then you might not have access to the Internet and others outside your local network wont be able to connect to your collaboration.
- Select the server in the My Servers drop down box and click Stop to shutdown an existing server. Be mindful when taking this action because stopping a server will also end all the existing collaborations started on your server without warning.
- Select the location of the collaboration's server. You may need to
configure your firewall to enable this service.
- Click Connect and if their is an existing Group matching your input on the server you selected and you have the Password correct, you will join that collaboration. If you enter a Group name that doesn't exist, then you will start a collaboration and be the first to join. If you are starting the collaboration with My Computer selected then a server will automatically be started on your local machine's specified port and reflected in the My Servers drop down box.
Collaborations [top]
You may partake in multiple collaborations at a time. Use the drop down box at the top display the panel for a specific collaboration.
Change Color
The Do It button with the Change Color option is used for updating you collaboration identification. It pops open a color chooser for changing the color that is used to help distinguish your actions in the editor.
Delay Inbound/Outbound
The Delay Inbound/Outbound check boxes is a locking mechanism at your control. They allow you to lock your editor by queue incoming and outgoing edits and process them at a later point. They allow you to edit without interruptions or complete a section before sharing it with the rest of the group.
Disconnect and Close
Disconnect will sever your connection with the other collaborators but will not close the collaboration panel in case you would like to review the chat or save a replay. Close will both terminate your connection and close the collaboration panel currently selected in the drop down box at the top.
Save Replay
The Do It button with the Save Replay option saves your collaboration session as an XML file for replay. Currently, only the editing taking place in your editor is replay-able. Replay of the collaboration panel itself (i.e. the chat and member list) will be supported in a later release.
Replay Tab [top]
You may replay multiple files at a time. Use the drop down box
at the top display the controls for the specific file.
Close Replay
Closes the selected replay control panel.
New Replay
The New Replay button adds another panel of replay controls that can be selected in drop down box at the top. This enables replay of multiple files.
Browse
Opens a file chooser for selecting the replay xml file that you want to replay.
Play
Coming Soon... Plays the collaboration session back in real-time instead of the Set Delay.
Seek To
Allows the user to Seek To a specific event in the collaboration session at the Set Delay pace.
Set Delay
Specifies the delay, in seconds, between events during playback.

- If you're behind a firewall or using NAT, make sure the port is not blocked and your router's port-forwarding is configured.
You can write together with the plain text editor that supports (Ostermiller's) syntax highlighting for Java, C, HTML, etc. You can collaboratively edit code, web pages, papers and record the session later playback. Give it a try!
You can draw together with the DrawSWF (a simple drawing program written in Java that allows you to save the drawing process as a Flash file). With CollabEd plugged in, multiple people can collaborate to create Flash illustrations. This is simply a demonstration of CollabEd's ability to collaboratize non-text editors.
